🌎Happy Earth Day! 🌍 The 7th grade Science teams found creative ways to give back to our planet. Yesterday students planted flowers outside the building, while other students made signs to share about Earth Day. Today students spent the afternoon picking up litter outside the school. It was a great way to enjoy the fresh air, make a difference, and show some love to the Earth!

This past week in Mrs. Swift's 7-4 science classes, students explored the impact of invasive species in Oklahoma. After conducting research on various species, students created Canva posters and presented their findings to the class. From Zebra Mussels to Water Hyacinths, here are just a few of the invasive species we learned about and the presenters who presented them!

This week in Mrs. Swift's Science class, students participated in a hands-on lab modeling biomagnification through a marine ecosystem. They used cups to represent different organisms—plankton, mackerel, tuna, and humans—and Skittles to symbolize toxins like mercury. As the activity progressed, students observed how toxins accumulate and become more concentrated as they move up the food chain, ultimately causing the most harm to apex predators. This interactive lab helped students understand the concept of biomagnification and its real-world impact on marine life and human health.

Team 7-5 and science teacher, Mr. Smith, in partnership with Tulsa Area Trout in the Classroom have been raising fish all year! They have learned about the ecosystem, trout life cycles, water quality, and more! This week, the whole team went to release their trout into the wild. They also learned about tying flies, casting fly rods, and types of bugs they can use as bait. 🎣It was such a beautiful day outdoors, so full of hands-on learning. ☀️

⭐ OANJHS⭐ Our National Junior Honor Society hosted 16 schools with 250+students at the Glenpool Conference Center Tuesday. JPS Police Chief Tim Stone II, Police Chief Richard Phillips, and Captain Fish from Muskogee Tribal Police- Lighthorse Police Department, Police Chief Jason Jackson from Jenks Police Department and finally, Fire Captain Richie Martinez all gave guidance about being “First to Respond," our conference theme. 🚨🚒 Dr. Nick Brown and Dr. Stacey Butterfield opened today’s conference. Dr. Butterfield did a very fun activity with the students that showed them the first step to leadership begins with them. Break out sessions included JMS Nurse Heather Hoffhine practicing CPR on pillow partners and also putting together first aid kits for each student to take home with them. Eric Flowers, MS, BSN, RN, CEN from Tulsa ER and Hospital with two colleagues provided instructions on "stop the bleed", splinting and what to expect when visiting the ER. Participants also got to experience a Yoga session and First Response Jeopardy. 🏥

What’s in Your Trash? 🧐 Yesterday, JMS students took spring cleaning to the next level! Team 7-2 science students teamed up with Health & Wellness classes for a recycling audit at school. Each week, Mrs. Taylor's Health & Wellness students collect blue bins across campus and empty them into our Mr. Murph containers. Yesterday, Dr. Nolte's science students sorted, weighed, and analyzed our school’s recycling to track what’s being recycled—and what doesn’t belong. These were our main findings: * About 80% of our recyclables were paper and cardboard * About 8% were plastic bottles * Too many non-recyclable items—including snack wrappers, tissues, and even a ton of pencils (really?? 🤨) Reminder: Contaminated recycling bins can lead to entire batches being rejected. Keep those blue bins truly "green"! Check your school’s recycling guide, and remember—reduce and reuse come first! ♻️
