JFA Newsletter February/March 2026

Punxsutawney Phil said 6 more weeks of winter. I’m not sure how that translates to our winters here in Oklahoma, but we will be seeing some changes here at the FA in the coming weeks. Some to do with enrollment and looking ahead in your students’ high school careers, some within our own building with some renovations.

Enrollment for Sophomore Year

Believe it or not, it is already time for enrollment conference for our freshmen headed to the 10th grade. This semester, students had engaged in several activities during Advisory to explore their interests, goals, and possible career paths.

∙ February 23—Parents will receive an invitation to sign up for enrollment conferences using Koalander.

∙ March 3, 10—Enrollment conferences will be held virtually or at the Freshman Academy based upon parent preference (5:00-8:30 pm).

Ask your child about the ICAP plan created in Advisory. This four-year plan can lead to helpful conversations at home about each student’s chosen pathway. If you have questions about the enrollment process, please contact our Registrar deborah.stinson@jenksps.org, or our counselors at any time (amber.mayfield@jenksps.org or kimberly.catterson@jenksps.org).

JFA Spanish Club visits the Grace Living Center

JFA Spanish teachers Maria Boscan and Lynne Dooley brought valentine goody bags with candy and a little lotion and a lip balm to the patients of the Grace Living Center. It was a great experience for the students, they enjoyed doing this project and all the "Grands" were surprise and excited about the little present.

No School 2/27/26 JPS Collaboration/Distance Learning Day

Please note that Friday, February 27th, is a Distance Learning/Collaboration Day for all JPS school sites.

Please have your student look in Canvas for their assignments and learning activities.

Friday April 17th, 2026 will be the last Collaboration/Distance Learning Day for students.

Attendance Matters

Please make sure that your student is attending regularly. If your student misses more than 10% of the semester, without a valid excuse, they could fail their classes due to attendance. Please be sure to call in your student if they are absent to Mrs. Jenny Ward at ext .2278.

Our Assistant Principals will be reaching out to you and your student if they are in danger of attendance failure.

Jenks PLAC

We are excited to give you the dates for the upcoming Jenks Parent Legislative Advocacy Coalition; PLAC. Our next meeting will take place on March 6, 2026, at the ESC from 12:00-1:00 pm. Lunch will be provided at each of our meetings. RSVP to Jenksplac@gmail.com.

The scheduled dates for the Jenks PLAC meeting are: 3/6/26, 4/3/26, 5/1/26

We would love for you to come and be a part of our discussion on ways to advocate for public funding that affects JPS, be informed on current legislative issues and promote the PLAC with our stakeholders and community.

Please reach out and let us know if you have any questions.

JPS Bond Election—A sincere "Thank You"

The JPS Bond Election was passed last week. Because of supportive patrons through the years, our bond funds have led to innovative facilities and cutting-edge programs. This year’s bond issues include additional funding for our final construction addition to our Freshman Academy building. Bond monies have gone to various projects within our Freshman Academy that have made significant impact on our students, like a new kiln for our ceramics classes. For more information about other proposed items, please refer to our Jenks Public Schools website.

From all of us at the Freshman Academy, thank you! We appreciate the continued support and your votes really do matter for our students and school. We are set for a July opening for the Freshman Academy and are excited to see the new building come together.

Executive Functioning Support for Students

Developing the Skills That Drive Success

As students begin high school, they are developing executive function skills — the brain-based abilities that help them plan, organize, manage time, regulate emotions, begin tasks, and follow through. These skills are guided by the prefrontal cortex, which continues developing throughout adolescence. Many common 9th-grade challenges — forgotten assignments, procrastination, or difficulty starting work — often reflect the development of executive skills rather than a lack of ability.

In our classrooms, we have intentionally worked on these skills through AVID strategies. Students practice organization through structured binder or notebook systems, focused note-taking, strengthen accountability through collaboration, and reflect on their thinking to deepen their understanding of concepts.

Parents can reinforce this growth at home by:

Encouraging use of a planner or calendar (digital or handwritten)

Breaking large tasks into smaller steps

Asking, “What’s your plan?” to promote ownership

Supporting consistent homework and sleep routines

When school and home partner together, students build the independence and self-management needed to thrive.

Stay tuned for more ways to partner with us and help support your student with the development of of these skills!
