Media Center: D, 3rd & 4th Grade
POLICIES:
Using materials from the media center is a both a privilege and a responsibility.
Find out more about the aim of the Media Center
Check out:
Two free choice books per student can be checked out IF the student has no overdue books. Books are checked out for two weeks and can be renewed as often as needed as long as there are no holds on the book. If a student is working on a book project, he or she may check out a third book.
Overdues:
Overdue notices will be sent home with other Thursday information. There are no fines for overdue books.
Lost & Damaged Books:
Students are responsible for lost or damaged books and will need to pay for or replace them. If a book is damaged, please do not attempt to repair it. Bring the book back with a note or phone call and we will take care of it.
Parents may check out books, too. See Mrs. Tirrell or Ms. Butters.
RESEARCH GUIDANCE:
Writing citations for your research sources
School Library Catalog - look up books available in Media D, and access web site collections created for specific projects. Students can log in to access our subscription research databases using the same login they have for their Chromebook.
Fact Monster - Good for research: categories include World, United States, People, Science, and Sports. Use the search box to find what you are interested in. Has links to reference resources: dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, almanac, and timelines.

National Geographic for Kids - Stories, games, and activities from around the world. Based on the magazine, the site is searchable. |

This online resource if provided through funds raised by the PTA-sponsored Book Fair. It combines fiction and non-fiction books on a common subject. Students can also play a matching and vocabulary game after viewing/reading the books, and there are safe links to Internet sites with more information. Because this is a subscription resource, please email Deanna Tirrell, Media Specialist, for the URL and password. |

TumbleBooks is a collection of Storybooks (animated, talking picture books) with fiction, non-fiction and foreign language titles, Read-Alongs (chapter books with sentence highlighting and narration but no animation), and Tumble Puzzles & Games. TumbleBooks are created from existing picture books. Because this is a subscription resource, please email Deanna Tirrell, Media Specialist, for the URL and password. |
READING SUGGESTIONS:
Third and Fourth graders have the opportunity read and vote for the state-wide Sequoyah Award winning book. In order to vote in March, they must read or listen to at least 3 books and fill out a Reading Reflection form in the library. Those students who read 6 or more books (and fill out the form) are invited to an ice cream party at the end of the year with the librarians. Nominated books are available in Media D and at the public libraries.
Sequoyah Award nominated books (Not all nominated books are appropriate or recommended for all readers.)
Finding books with your child:
You can look for 'just right' leveled books at www.lexile.com/fab or www.scholastic.com (which has tabs for kids and parents).
Your child will most likely know a letter level for their reading; you can go to this chart to compare that letter to the numbers of the Lexile level, which is more commonly available.
