Varsity Volleyball Assistant Coach Brian Shans
Coach Brian Shans is beginning his 17th year of coaching Volleyball with the Jenks Trojans Volleyball program. While participating in the Corporate Challenge Volleyball League in 2000 Coach Shans was approached by Oklahoma volleyball legend and Jenks Volleyball coordinator Jesse Cooper and offered a position to coach one of the two freshman volleyball teams. Coach Shans grew in his coaching skills during the 2001–2004 school years while coaching the freshman teams. In 2005 Coach Shans was asked by then Head Coach Beth Erickson to move up to coach the JV team and to be her assistant varsity coach, a position that he has filled to the present. The next season in 2006 Coach Shans assisted Erickson in winning the 6A State Volleyball Championship beating Edmond North in four sets. Coach Shans continues to fill the JV coach position and over the years the junior varsity team has continued to excel by finishing several times as the top JV team in the Frontier Valley Conference. Coach Shans was also a member of the coaching staff under the leadership of Head Coach Tanna Smith when the varsity team featuring 10 seniors won the 6A State Volleyball Championship in 2014. He is also involved in club volleyball. Starting in 2004 Coach Shans joined Team Tulsa Volleyball Club where over the years he has coached the 14’s, 15’s, and 16’s teams. During the 2017 club season, he joined the Ultimate Performance Volleyball Club with the other Jenks volleyball coaches and coached the 13-2 team.
Besides being a coach Coach Shans has taught secondary science for 25 years and was selected as the Jenks Freshman Academy Teacher of the Year for the 2012 - 2013 school year. This year he is teaching ninth grade biology at the Jenks Freshman Academy. He is a member of the Freshman Academy Technology Team and the FAHS Awards Committee. Coach Shans has a son, Isaac.
