Dear Parents,

It is my pleasure to serve as your child’s music teacher this year. Children respond spontaneously to the universal language of music.  On-going scientific research supports the tremendous benefits of arts education.  Listed below is a small sampling of this research:

  • Childhood Music Lessons Actually Enlarge the Brain
  • Music Students Score higher SAT Scores

Profiles of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The College Board

  • Rhythm Students learn Fractions Better

  • Piano Raises Conceptual Math Scores

  • Substance Abuse Lowest in Music Students

The performing arts of Jenks represent a tradition of excellence.  Degreed and state certified music teachers serve as specialists in all elementary and secondary schools in the district.  Students attend music class once in a three-day rotation of art and physical education.  The elements of music, rhythm, pitch, tempo, form, harmony, tone color and dynamics are taught through folk music, multicultural and classical masterworks as well as a wide range of vocal and instrumental experiences.

Music grades are calculated by a point system in two separate areas:

1)   demonstration of musical skills

2)   participation in class and character habits.

Each grade level will perform during the school year in a formal concert or parent look-in.  Dates and times will be sent home at a later date.   I look forward to a year of enjoyable musical experience with your student.  Feel free to email me  with questions or concerns.  Thank you for your support in this important part of your child’s education.
