                                    Martin’s Memo

We have had so much fun in 1st grade the past couple of weeks.  We have been getting to know each other through “community circle” discussions and activities.  The outcome of the Tribes process is to develop a positive environment that promotes human growth and learning.  This process includes honoring our four classroom agreements; attentive listening, appreciation/no put-downs, the right to pass, and mutual respect.  I hope that my years of teaching experience and the Tribes philosophy will be reflected in your child’s enthusiasm about learning this year.
MATH: Our math focus is on addition and subtraction. We will learn different strategies to use when adding and subtracting. Students will also be telling and solving number stories. Teaching the uses of numbers is an important part of the school math experience.   I will be encouraging your child to use a variety of strategies when attacking a given problem.  It is important for your child to be aware from the very beginning that numbers make sense only if they are known in context, usually through the use of labels or units.

READING: We are busy writing and reading.  Our reporters are busy interviewing our special person of the day.  Each day I randomly determine who will be interviewed. The reporters want to find out what he/she likes to eat, play and what do they do after school. This activity for each child -interviewing and shared writing of the article- develops crucial oral language skills and helps children see how writing and reading occur. Also, we will focus on picking out good fit books for reading and practicing reading quietly each day.

WRITING: We are working on writing about small moments in our lives. We will pick one and “publish” it at the end of the month. We are also working on the mechanics of a sentence and forming letters correctly.

SOCIAL STUDIES: School community will be our focus.  We will discuss why we need rules at school, who helps us at school and why is it important to learn from others.
