Thursday, May 8th:  9:00 Pruner, 9:45 Baker, 10:30 Hughes, 1:25 M. Brewer, 2:10 Taylor

The first grade programs are about twenty minutes in length.  It's intent is for you to have a "look in" at what your child is doing in music class. Parents, please allow extra time to park, check in at the lobby guard and sign in once you get to the music room. Often, classroom teachers will have each student's art portfolio for you to view in their classrooms before or after the program.

For the programs, students are asked to wear their class shirt (if they have one) or a solid color shirt with jeans or jeans skirt.  We will take time for pictures either before or after the programs.  We look forward to showing you what we are learning and experiencing in music class.  I hope the value of music is evident with our demonstration.  Your presence and support is very much appreciated.

2nd Grade Music Programs 2014

Wednesday, April 2nd: Duesler
Thursday, April 3rd:  Hollingsworth
Friday, April 4th:  Moore

*Time of the program has yet to be determined*

2nd graders will join together with other 2nd graders for their program. It is a multi-cultural, multi-arts demonstration.  More information to come.

In class we are learning the difference between beat and rhythm, recognizing the staff, the treble clef and repeat signs.  We are reading, writing and playing rhythms.  We are also moving to the music using our imaginations and keeping the beat or playing ostinatos on instruments.  All of the instruments in our class are percussion which means we strike, scrape or shake them.  We have xylophones for practice, metals (triangles, cymbals, a cow bell), woods (rhythm sticks, tone blocks and wood blocks), drums, and various shakers.  We are learning the dance "Jump Jim Joe" in first grade with a unique movement in concentric circles.  In second grade, we're working on a fun hand jive creating our own verses using different verbs and nouns.

Why Teach Music

At Our Site
Jenks East Singers

Working with the 4th grade Jenks East Singers is always rewarding.  We usually have around 50 students in the group.  Their first performance is the fourth grade Veteran's Day Program at the High School Performing Arts Center.  JES meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. in Mrs. Felty's classroom in Building E.  Rehearsals for the holiday repertoire begins the first Tuesday in October.  It is always a joy to perform holiday music at the airport, city hall and for senior citizens in various venues. The group represents Jenks East Elementary showing strong character, poise and beautiful singing. Our final activity with the Singers is the Awards luncheon where certificates are presented to honor their efforts.
