Healthy & Fit
We will start "Wellness Wednesday" in October. On Wednesdays, students will participate in healthy and fit activities in the front oval during recess instead of on the playground. Students may bring ipods to listen to music as they run. If electronics are used for anything other than music, they will be confiscated. Last year we also had dancing and CrossFit made an appearance too! We are trying to set the example for health here at JWI. Teachers even give up half their lunch to participate in this. On Wednesdays, students can wear their Wellness Wednesday shirts. This year's theme is Run Rock and Roll! The order form for the shirt is attached. The cost is $10 but is not required. Orders will be taken until Friday, September 27. Checks should be made out to JWI.
Tulsa Zoo Run- West Intermediate invites all students, staff and families to participate in the Tulsa Zoo Run on October 2nd. Entry forms and money are due to school by Sept. 17th. See link and brochure for details!
For every participant, our school receives $1.00 back to go to classrooms and teachers.
Recently, federal and state legislators have created laws that require schools to be involved in our students’ health and fitness. Jenks West Intermediate has been focusing on health physical fitness as a goal in physical education and during lunch and recess. Our Wellness Wednesdays have provided leaders in the community to speak to our students during lunch to inspire, educate, and act as role models. Speakers have ranged from pediatricians and TV weather personalities to varsity football players and pom squads. We would like to thank all of these speakers, especially St. Francis Health Zone for visiting us once a month and serving as a mentor in our endeavors.
Our goals for the 2010-2011 school year will be to continue our efforts in health, safety, and fitness promotion. JWI will also be focusing on nutrition at school events and parties. We would like to encourage the JWI community to consider healthy snacks with nutritional value and less fat and sugar. The cafeteria has a catering menu that will also be posted on our website. This is a convenient way to supply snacks without a lot of time and effort. If you are interested, you may call Teresa Totty at 299-4415 ext. 2970. If you have any ideas to contribute to our efforts please let us know. Your participation is important to us. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
