Bus Stop Monitoring Information
UPDATED: October 27, 2011
In an effort to provide the safest and most efficient service for our students, the Transportation Department has developed a plan to continuously monitor bus stops throughout the school year and modify them as needed.
All areas in the district will be evaluated during this process. The order of evaluation is based on data provided by bus drivers, school sites, and GPS systems on the buses. Bus load and bus stop counts are monitored throughout the school year. Every square mile in the District will be researched, in priority order, based on the route information, until we have successfully addressed all areas. Emergency situations, such as a sex offender moving in to the area or a bus that has become overloaded, will take precedence and are moved to the front of the line to be researched and processed.
When analyzing a bus stop, the follow criteria are considered:
- Safety
- Placement of stop (Is it safe? Is it centrally located to all riders?)
- The amount of time students spend on the bus
- The number of students at a stop/the total number of riders on the bus
- The timeliness of arrivals, departures, and total route time
If the decision is made to add or modify a bus stop, all riders will be notified at least 3 days in advance. For the most part, bus stops are placed around the perimeter of a square mile or down a main arterial street. Bus stops are designed to service all current and future eligible riders for a specific area. Two neighborhoods may share the same bus stop, depending on the number of riders.
A map of the district (click here to view) has been posted to inform you on how the evaluation of bus stops is progressing and when you might be able to expect changes to your bus routes. The legend for the map is as follows:
- Yellow: Area has been researched. Some initial changes are complete, some pending. (Changes should be complete in 5-10 days)
- Orange: Area has been researched. All initial changes are pending. (Changes should be complete in 10-15 days)
- Green: Area has been researched. All initial changes have been made.
