Daily grades will be moving from PowerSchool to Canvas
Four years ago Jenks Public Schools started an 1:1 Instructional Initiative. One of the vital components of the 1:1 Instructional Initiative is Canvas, our learning management system (LMS). Canvas is a powerful tool for students, teachers, and parents when all assignments are posted and recorded in this system. Last semester teachers in grades 5-12 started entering all assignments and grades in Canvas and pushing them to PowerSchool. This allowed students and parents to not only see grades but also have easy access to the different learning activities that take place in classrooms everyday. Through this process, we discovered using both “gradebooks” has limitations and created frustrations for some stakeholders. To help alleviate these frustrations, beginning the Spring 2017 semester, teachers will only be entering grades in Canvas. Only a final grade will be entered into PowerSchool at the end of the semester.

What is Canvas?
Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that allows teachers to provide instructional support, class calendars, assignments and resources for students in a safe online environment. Canvas is an integral part of blended classroom instruction.
Is the District going to continue to use PowerSchool?
Yes. PowerSchool is our Student Information System (SIS) and will continue to be used throughout the District. The table below gives information on the functions of each system.
How is Canvas “better” for checking student grades/learning?
PowerSchool excels at student information where Canvas is better for communicating student learning. For example, using Canvas, parents have the opportunity to see the assignments and other events from ALL courses posted to ONE calendar. With many of those assignments, you can verify that your student did, in fact, submit work and even WHEN it was submitted. You can also see the assignment directions and expectations. You will also be able to view future assignments posted on Canvas. Using the course grade summary in Canvas, you can automatically see how assignments are weighted (if a teacher uses that system) and know which assignments will affect your student’s grade the most and have the opportunity to communicate with your student’s teacher(s), if needed.
What I need to do now?
Now is the time (if you haven’t already) to become a Parent Observer on your student’s Canvas accounts. Why?
All teachers in grades 5-12th, will ONLY be using Canvas to record grades throughout the semester. See the back of this page for instructions on becoming a Canvas Parent Observer
What does Canvas offer for Parents?
Just like PowerSchool, Canvas allows parents to set up notifications and offers a way to check your student’s learning on a mobile platform. Canvas makes it easier for students and parents to communicate with teachers. Currently, the best method for keeping track of your student’s grades and learning in Canvas is via full web browser or mobile browser.
*PLEASE NOTE: You must have your student's Canvas username and password to link your Canvas parent account to your child's Canvas account. Please contact your child's site if you do not have this information.
Why would a parent want to create a Canvas parent account?
Canvas will give parents the everyday overview of their child's learning interactions including calendars, newsletters, assignments, grades, submissions and assessments. Starting in the spring of 2017, teachers in grades 5-12th will enter all assignments and grades in Canvas only. Grades will only be entered into PowerSchool at the end of the term. Parents will need to create a Canvas Parent Observer account to view their student's daily grades.
What options do parents have when it comes to Canvas?
Note: Parents can use their Canvas Parent Observer account login information to log into the Canvas Parent App. They cannot use the Canvas Parent App to access Canvas on the web.
How do you become a parent observer?
Using a web browser, go to jenks.instructure.com.
Click on "Parent of Canvas User?"
Enter your full name and Email address
Enter your student's Canvas login information. (See letter received at the enrollment office or report card for this information)
You will receive a confirmation email from Canvas with a link to finish the process and set up your password.
What is an Observer role in Canvas?
Observers have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course and a calendar of assignments. Like students, Observers cannot view a course until it is published and the course has started. For assistance with Assignments, Test Dates, Quizzes, or other Canvas course content, please contact your child’s teacher.

iOS Apple-Click on action icon and select “Request Desktop Site”

Too many CanvasNotifications?
Parents can adjust Canvas Notifications:
From your Canvas Dashboard:
Click on Account
Click on Notifications
Set the frequency of the different Canvas Notifications
throughout the school year as the need arises.

Note: Only download the Canvas Parent App after you have created your Observer account above. You will use your Observer login information by clicking on “Login with Canvas.”
The Canvas Parent App enhances the potential for parents to engage in their student's education. Parents can review upcoming or past assignments, check on grades, and receive course announcements. However, currently the online parent observer accounts allows parents to see the most detailed overview of their student’s academic life. Parents are encouraged to use the Observer account on a full or mobile web browser whenever possible. The Canvas (Orange/Red) app found in the different app stores is intended for students and teachers. Parents should be sure to use the Canvas Parent app. The Canvas Parent app has a different set of notification options than the online observer.
How do parents create a Canvas Parent app account?
Parents are encouraged to use the Observer account on a full or mobile web browser whenever possible.

Should parents create a Canvas Parent App account and a Canvas Observer online account?
No, A parent should create a Parent Observer account at Jenks.instructure.com and click on "Login with Canvas" in the Canvas Parent App. Do not create a new account.
Can I view multiple children on one Canvas Parent Account?
Yes, On the Web Observer account, you will see "Observing" under your personal settings and the option to add another child.
With the Parent App, you can add another child by clicking on the gear icon and pressing the "+" sign.

TIP: Multiple Children? Color code each child's course title or Give each course a NickName to help distinguish each child's courses.
What if I forgot my Canvas Parent account password?
Web: Go to jenks.instructure.com and click on "Forgot Password"
Mobile: Click on "Forgot Password"
Enter the email you used to create the account and Canvas will send you an email to reset your password.
