Welcome to Pre-AP Chemistry and Astronomy
Pre-AP Chemistry is an introductory course in the elements, properties, and reactions of materials. This course is designed to prepare you for AP Chemistry. We are going to have a fantastic year as we explore what things are made of and how they react in a variety of environments. It is my belief that students learn best when they are challenged and able to experience things "hands on." It is my goal to have students in the lab at least once a week as we explore a variety of instructional and inquiry based activities.
This is my first year to teach Astronomy. In first semester we will be focusing on the stars. Next semester we will pull in our vision and look at the wide variety of planets in our solar system. Again, I am committed to providing interactive learning experiences to help make this "backyard" astronomy course both fun and enlightening.
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma in 1995 and a Master of Science in Math and Science Education from the University of Tulsa in 1997. In order to reinforce that education, I find it necessary to spend a portion of each summer back in the classroom as a student myself. I am an active participant in the Oklahoma Aerospace Fellows Program and QuarkNet and I look forward to sharing what I learned from those currently "in the thick" of real scientific research.
For many students, chemistry is a completely new experience in the classroom. I encourage anyone with questions or concerns to please come see me. I am available to students each morning by 7:15 and I stay at school until 3:30 for anyone needing extra assistance.
My teaching schedule this year has me teaching 2nd-6th hours. You can leave me a message at ext. 4216. If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact Mrs. Meehleder in the guidance office.
