2011-12 Chinese Exchange
General Information
The Jenks-Chengdu School Exchange (JCSE) provides an opportunity for Jenks teachers and students to experience a broad and introductory cultural orientation to China. The program is for students who show an interest in learning more about China through language study, hosting Chinese students, and travelling to China.
Two Chinese teachers and their students will visit Jenks in the fall of 2011. The Chinese students will be here for three weeks, and their teachers will stay until Thanksgiving.
In March, capturing Spring Break, Jenks students and two teachers will travel to China for three and a half weeks. They will tentatively leave the first week of March 2012 and tentatively return the last week of March 2012.
The JCSE is a program that was established in conjunction with the Foundation for East Asian Studies sponsored by the Freeman Foundation and Oklahoma University. The Freeman Foundation funded a trip to send Principal Mike Means to visit the school in Chengdu in 2002 where he met with Principal Wang to set up this school exchange. The exchange has been operating since 2003. The Freeman Foundation committed to Jenks to underwrite certain program costs for three years and their financial support ended in 2005-2006.
Program Content
The Chinese students will arrive just before Labor Day. During their stay in Jenks, they live with their Jenks partner. It is the responsibility of the host family to provide lodging, food, and transportation for the visiting students. The members of the Jenks exchange and their parents will put together an itinerary for the Chinese allegation's visit including field trips, school activities, home get-togethers, and a welcome and farewell banquet. Participants will be required to attend most of these events. The families will also have time to entertain their Chinese guest on their own. Participants are encouraged to establish a relationship with the visiting students and teachers, as they will be their hosts during their Chengdu stay.
In March, Jenks students and two teachers from Jenks will travel to China. The tentative itinerary is to travel from Tulsa to Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Guilin, Shanghai, and back to Tulsa. Hotel accommodations, meals, and excursions in Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin, and Shanghai will be included in the travel arrangements. In Chengdu, the Chinese host families will be responsible for our food, transportation, and local site-seeing. Participants will attend classes each day at Chengdu #7 - one of China's premier math and science high schools.
