School Choice

The East Intermediate staff takes great pride in the educational opportunities we have been able to provide for your children. We have worked very hard to meet the needs of all students, because every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. A few of the site initiatives that are used to ensure success include:  Students Overcoming Arithmetic & Reading (S.O.A.R.), RESOURCE for 5th graders, Creating Academically Responsible EIsers (C.A.R.E), Math Counts, Sino-Trojan Academy, and many more special programs.

Each school in the state of Oklahoma is required to annually assess students using the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test (OCCT) given every April. The results of this test determine whether or not a school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which is one of the cornerstones of the federal Elementary Secondary Education Act (ESEA), formerly known as the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). AYP is a measure of year-to-year achievement on statewide assessments. Schools that do not meet the state standard for AYP in ALL subgroup areas for two or more consecutive years are placed on Needs Improvement status.

In spite of our site’s total Academic Performance Index (API) score increasing from 1281 last year to 1323 this year, our school has been identified as a school that did not meet AYP due to the English Language Learners and Hispanic subgroup areas.  Federal law requires scores for English Language Learners to be factored in to the school’s performance data after students have attended school for one calendar year in the United States. Achieving the same level of proficiency expected of students whose first language is English is a very difficult goal to meet in such a short period of time.

After evaluating our student data, the following strategies and programs will be implemented this year:

  • Increased support for English Language Learner students from Title I and ELD specialists,
  • Increased reading and math support for struggling students in grades five and six,
  • Development of before and/or after school programs to support students needing additional help,
  • Increased use of technology to support differentiated instruction for students,
  • Implementation of a Formative Assessment initiative that will create a strong alliance between students and teachers and give students greater ownership for their progress.

Because East Intermediate is identified for improvement, the district must offer you the opportunity to transfer your child to another intermediate school in the Jenks Public School District. There is a firm deadline in the transfer process, so please take the time to carefully read all the enclosed materials.

If you are considering transferring your child, please review the following information:

  • The placement will be for the entire 2011-2012 school year.  If you choose a transfer, you will be able to return to East Intermediate, but may not opt to do so until the 2012-2013 school year.
  • Transportation will be provided.  Students will ride their regular neighborhood bus to East Intermediate where they will then board a shuttle to West Intermediate.
  • If you choose to accept the transfer, your child will be able to continue at West Intermediate through sixth (6th) grade.
  • When East Intermediate exits School Improvement status, no new transfers will be granted—even to siblings.
  • When East Intermediate exits School Improvement status, transportation to West Intermediate will no longer be provided.

Parents play the most critical role in ensuring a child’s educational opportunity is maximized for success. Parental support is a key ingredient, and there are numerous ways for you to be involved at East Intermediate. This year you will be offered opportunities to learn how to support and enhance your child’s success. Please take advantage of these opportunities and never hesitate to contact any school staff member if you have questions or suggestions.

Comparison of JPS Intermediate Schools

East Intermediate’s many successes cannot be measured by one test and cannot be expressed solely in scores; however, scores do provide information for both successes and challenges. Based on the results of the 2011 Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests, East Intermediate has been identified as a Needs Improvement school and must offer parents the option to transfer their student(s) to another intermediate school in the Jenks Public School District.

To assist parents in their decision, the district has provided testing information and a comparison of services offered by the two intermediate schools in the Jenks district: East Intermediate and West Intermediate. Please use this information in making an informed decision about the education of your child.
