Ms. Whitman-Qi, English Language Development, 1st grade
Ni Hao, Guten Tag, Bon Jour, Mingalarba, Buon Guiorno, Xin Chào,Shalom, Namaste, Ohayoou, Privet, Aloha, Hola! Welcome to my site. My Name is Laura Whitman-Qi, and I teach English Language Development to 1st grade students at East Elementary. I love working with bilingual and multi-lingual students as they acquire and improve both their English language skills and their academics.
I began teaching English in China. This is my 8th year at Jenks East Elementary. I have a Master's degree in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), and I am a National Board Certified teacher. I share many of my students' experiences as language learners, having lived abroad for a great deal of my life, and having been a student in several foreign cultures.
My philosophy as an ELL teacher is that students must learn English, academics, and to value American culture, while still retaining, celebrating, and valuing their own native languages and cultural identities. These students will become true citizens of the world, and tomorrow's global leaders!
