School Choice
The staff at East Elementary takes pride in the educational opportunities they are able to provide for your children. East Elementary teachers and staff work very hard to meet the needs of all students, because every student deserves the opportunity for success.
Each school in the state of Oklahoma is required to annually assess students using the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test (OCCT). The results of this test determines whether or not a school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which is one of the cornerstones of the federal Elementary Secondary Education Act (ESEA), formerly known as No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). AYP is a measure of year-to-year student achievement on statewide assessments. Schools that do not meet the state standard for AYP for two or more consecutive years are placed on Needs Improvement status.
In spite of the academic success of many of our students, this year, East Elementary is identified as a school that did not meet AYP. Even with the school’s overall success and high tests scores, East Elementary did not meet Oklahoma’s educational standards on the 2010 Oklahoma District Accountability Data Report. As a result of continuously evaluating student data, the following strategies and programs are in place for this year:
- Increased support for kindergarten students from a reading specialist.
- Reading specialists and reading teachers will be assigned to support each first and second grade classroom.
- Increased reading and math support for students in third and fourth grade.
- Before and after school programs for those students needing additional support.
- Increased use of technology to support differentiated instruction for students
- Implementation of a full day prekindergarten program.
Since East Elementary is identified for improvement, the district was required to offer East Elementary parents the opportunity to transfer their child to another elementary in the Jenks Public School District. There was a firm deadline in the transfer process, and the deadline for transfers of current East Elementary students has passed, but all newly enrolling students have the option to transfer to another Jenks elementary school. Please review the Comparison of JPS Elementaries below.
As a parent, your involvement with your child’s education is a crucial component. Parental support is a key ingredient to student success, and there are many opportunities available for you to be involved at East Elementary:
- Attending parent-teacher conferences
- Volunteering at the school and at school events
- Making sure that your child attends school regularly, arrives on time and is prepared
- Supporting and monitoring your child’s reading minutes and homework
- Communicating with your child’s teacher
- Participating in PTA and/or Dynamic Dads
- Attending parent meetings regarding programs and services at school
This year you will be offered additional opportunities to learn ways to support and enhance your child’s success. Please take advantage of these and never hesitate to contact any school staff member if you have questions or suggestions.
Comparison of JPS Elementaries
The many successes at East Elementary cannot be measured by one test and cannot be expressed solely in scores; however, scores do provide educators with information about both successes and challenges. Based on the results of the 2010 Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests, East Elementary has been identified as a Needs Improvement school and must offer parents the option to transfer their student(s) to another elementary school in the Jenks Public School District.
To assist parents in their decision, the district has provided testing information and a comparison of services offered by the three elementaries in the Jenks district: East Elementary, Southeast Elementary, and West Elementary. Please use this information in making an informed decision about the education of your child. Transportation to the school will be available to those students who transfer to another elementary site. Students will ride their regular route bus to East Elementary where they will then board a shuttle to their new school.
