Kirbey Dietzel Named 2018-19 JPS' District Teacher of the Year
Kirbey Dietzel, fifth grade teacher at Jenks East Intermediate, is the 2018-19 Jenks Public Schools’ District Teacher of the Year. Dietzel, who teaches mathematics and science, was selected from a group of ten JPS Site Teachers of the Year by a committee of former finalists for Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year.
“I’m humbled to receive the honor of representing Jenks Public Schools as District Teacher of the Year,” Dietzel remarked. “This means I am able to share my passion for children and the education profession, as it is the cornerstone of our community’s strength. I’m proud to serve the community in which I’m deeply invested.”
Dietzel is a native of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. She has been teaching at JPS for six years and takes pride in creating the best possible learning environment for all of her students.
“When I hear students say they never liked math and science, but they love it now, it breathes life into my career,” Dietzel commented. “It’s why I do what I do, and it’s why I work so hard to make my classroom a safe space for students to learn and grow.”
Beyond the equations and the experiments, Dietzel enjoys helping fifth graders navigate through their particular phase of life.
“They are trying to figure out who they are as people, but they also want to be loved and accepted by their teacher,” said Dietzel. “Part of what I love about teaching is helping students get to know themselves and pointing them in the right direction to be successful.”
