Reading Mentors Needed (ongoing & flexible)
We are looking for volunteers for our Reading Mentor program at JEE for our 3rd and 4th grade ELL (English Language Learner) students.
The goal of the program is to increase the amount of time our ELL students are involved in one on one reading. This gives our students that are learning English more opportunities to read aloud, to listen to experienced readers, and to engage in discussions that will deepen comprehension and vocabulary.
We need volunteers to support this program who can commit to one hour per week or 30 minutes twice a week for the remainder of the school year. During this time the volunteer will be a reading mentor to one or two students learning English as a second language. The volunteer will listen to the student read from a variety of texts and engage in conversations with the student as they read to support understanding of the text.
Training will be offered to the volunteers. The volunteer will learn about how to build a relationship with the child to support learning, about the resources available to use during their reading time, and how to encourage and set goals with their student.
Mentoring times during the school day will be flexible and will be scheduled at a time that is best for the classroom teacher and the volunteer. Please email Heather Zemanek at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in becoming a Reading Mentor!
