Welcome to First Grade!
We are delighted to have your child in our program at Jenks East Elementary. First grade offers many opportunities for your child. Our goal this year is to offer a safe, orderly, and pleasant learning environment for each one of our students.
First grade holds the potential for starting children on a course of lifelong learning. Our first grade curriculum is a balance of child-centered and content-centered instructional activities. Students will be engaged in active learning opportunities. A wide variety of learning strategies are offered through whole group, small group and individual instruction.
The first grade curriculum is designed to develop children's knowledge and skills. Learning materials and activities are concrete, real, and relevant to our students' lives. First grade students are offered instruction in the following curricular areas:
Language Arts: This area of curriculum is our primary focus. Instruction in this area involves reading, spelling, penmanship, writing, and literature. The goal of our language arts program is to expand the child's ability to communicate orally and through reading and writing.
Math: This area of curriculum involves patterns, number sense, number operations, geometry/spatial sense, time and money, graphing, measurement, problem-solving, and data analysis. The goal of the math curriculum is to enable each child to use math through exploration, discovery, solving meaningful problems, and numerical calculation.
Social Studies: Our curriculum focuses of neighborhoods and communities, geography and mapping, American history, presidents and great leaders. Activities may be integrated with other curriculum areas.
Science: This area of curriculum focuses on weather and organisms. The goal of the science curriculum is to build on the child's natural interest in the world through observation, measurement, and identification of properties.
Through our curriculum we hope to develop the child's self-esteem of competence and positive feelings toward learning. Students also have the opportunity to attend art, music, or physical education daily. Your child will also attend computer lab and the media center weekly for instruction and book checkout.
Our school day is from 8:50am-3:30pm. Children may arrive at school at 8:30am. Please be sure your child is at school on time. Promptness in arriving at school sends a strong message that Mom and Dad think school is important. Regular school attendance is also mandatory. If your child is absent, please call the office, 299-4415 X5513 for building A and X5543 for building F to inform the administrative assistant of your child's absence. Documentation of your child’s absence with doctor’s or dentist’s notes is appreciated. If you need to check your child out before the school day is over, please report to the office of your child’s building.
We view you, the parents as an integral partner in your child's educational process. Your child's teacher will communicate with you on a regular basis through newsletters and conferences. I hope this year is a memorable one for you and your child! Your support and cooperation are appreciated as we strive to offer your child a quality education! If I can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to reach me. (299-4415 X5543).
