Summer Reading and Writing Opportunities

Suggestions for making literacy a priority over the summer

Importance of Summer Reading:

It is critical that students read and write over the summer months to continue to grow as readers and writers.  Research indicates that many students lose an average of three months reading progress during summer vacation, resulting in a two year loss by the time the students reach middle school .   The best way to prevent this loss is by making reading a priority this summer.  In fact, the best predictor of summer reading loss or gain is time spent reading.
