Welcome to Third Grade! (click here for school supply list)
Welcome to Jenks East Elementary. A combination of involved and concerned parents, and active community spirit, dedicated staff and supportive administration makes Jenks East a school of excellence.
Third grade classes all include instruction in mathematics, language arts, reading, science and social studies.
Language arts curriculum includes thinking, listening, reading, writing and speaking. In third grade the child’s language skills are enhanced through creative writing activities, as well as the teaching of grammar.
At the third grade level, word analysis, word attack skills, comprehension, study skills, and communication are stressed in reading. Reading is a complex process and no one method or device is a sufficient method of instruction. Third grade teachers blend together the many techniques necessary to move toward reading proficiency.
Our study of mathematics greatly emphasizes problem-solving skills. Math skills taught during this year are multiplication/division facts, geometry, and data collection.
The science curriculum in third grade encompasses life science, earth science, and physical science with the study of Soils, Rocks and Landforms; Motion and Matter; and Structures of Life. Inquiry, investigation, and discovery are important processes stressed during this year.
Social studies focuses on Oklahoma history, and incorporates map and globe skills and current events. An interdisciplinary content of history, geography, economics, government, and citizenship help develop these concepts.
Technology is integrated into all aspects of the third grade curriculum. Students are taught to use computers to increase academic and research skills, as well as to enhance the productivity of their work.
