How to Qualify
How does a student qualify for Gifted Services?
Any student who attains the 97th percentile or above on a nationally standardized test of intellectual ability will qualify for Gifted Services at Jenks. Jenks Public Schools uses the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to qualify our students, but accepts other full-scale intelligence tests as approved by the State Department of Oklahoma.
Any student who attains an age-based composite percentile rank at the 95th percentile or above will automatically be placed on the Gifted Identification Matrix. Please note, parents may request that a matrix be completed for students performing below the 95th percentile. The matrix scores, along with achievement scores and parent and teacher checklists, will determine eligibility for gifted education services.
The next testing opportunity is October 3-5, 2017 . The deadline to register is Friday, September 15, 2017.
What if my child is new to Jenks and was qualified Gifted at his/her previous school? Will he or she be automatically placed in the Gifted Program here?
Jenks Public Schools accepts full-scale Intelligence tests provided by other districts as well as scores from private psychologists when they meet district criteria. For example, tests must have been given within the last 3 years to be deemed qualifying. Otherwise parents will need to nominate their child for testing at the next available testing time. Again, we automatically qualify students scoring in the 97%ile and above. A matrix can be requested by parents for students scoring below the 95th%ile, but one will not automatically be initiated until that point.
When will Jenks Public Schools offer Gifted Testing?
Jenks Public Schools offers testing in September and again during the second semester each year. This year, the Cognitive Abilities Test will be offered on October 3-5, 2017 and then again February 27-March 1, 2018..
Please note, all 3rd and 6th graders, not already Identified as Gifted, will be tested in February of 2017, unless notification requesting otherwise is provided to the Site Gifted Coordinator. Please note that if your 3rd or 6th grade student tests in the fall, he/she will not re-test with his/her peers in the spring. Test results are mailed to the home approximately 4-6 weeks after testing.
