West Elementary is excited to have a school counseling program that covers children from pre-kindergarten to 4th. We have 3 counselors who are committed to the social, emotional and academic well-being of all students. Some of the counselors' responsibilities include working with students in large and small groups, working with students individually, consulting with and supporting teachers, working with the principals, talking with parents, and working with the special education team.
The counselors support the Core Values adopted by Jenks Public Schools. A different Core Value is highlighted every month.
September - Respect
October - Self Discipline
November - Courage
December - Compassion
January - Responsibility/Accountability
February - Perserverance
March - Honesty/Integrity
April - Teamwork
Besides the Core Values, the counselors may discuss topics such as Bully Behavior and what to do when confronted by a Bully, Friendship Skills and how to get along with others, Listening skills, Study Skills, and how to deal with their angry feelings.
During the 4th grade year, the students have the opportunity to participate in Peer Mediation training with counselor Rhonda Wells. The students learn to mediate on the playground when there is a conflict among children.
Gina Ritchie provides Finess for Kids at lunch for students which allows them to exercise during their recess time.
All 3 counselors offer counseling groups for grades kindergarten thru 4th grade. The groups offered are: Friendship Skills, Social Skills, Anger Management, Loss, ADHD, and Separation/Divorce. We have found that all children get a huge benefit by being with other children who have had some of the same experiences. They love working together in this small group.
